BeamNG Earth vs EarthNG at a glance
BeamNG.Earth uses a companion application and local world server to prepare geographic data for the game. EarthNG’s current player workflow uses a native planet ZIP together with installed regional packs. Both can build scenery around the player; the distinction is not simply streaming versus no streaming.

Two developers, two release channels
Check the repository owner before downloading: TecnaGamer/BeamNG.Earth and Alezx311/earthng are different projects. Their packages, instructions and issue trackers are not interchangeable. A tutorial for one can be actively misleading when applied to the other.
This independent guide focuses mainly on BeamNG.Earth. The comparison exists to help you identify the projects and choose the appropriate documentation, rather than to declare a universal winner. If you select EarthNG, use its own release and installation instructions from that point onward.
How each project builds the world
The practical difference is where the world data comes from and what must run alongside the game. It does not establish that either approach is always faster. World complexity, prepared data and the implementation all affect the result.
BeamNG.Earth: companion-assisted generation
The player application starts a local service that retrieves and prepares geographic data. The game-side mod receives the surrounding world. Moving somewhere new can require network retrieval and local building, while cached data can be reused.
The app and local service remain part of the playing session.
EarthNG: native mod with installed coverage
The native Lua mod uses the planet package and regional data installed in the game’s mods directory. The game still generates and loads scenery around the player; choosing ready-made regional packs removes the companion-server requirement for this route.
Your installed region packs determine the available landing coverage.
What you would actually download
For BeamNG.Earth: choose the player app
Select the Windows EXE or Linux AppImage from TecnaGamer’s releases. Read its game-compatibility notes and use the launcher workflow. Download the separate BeamMP host ZIP only when you intend to host a server.
For EarthNG: choose the planet and a region
The player README calls for earthng_planet.zip and at least one earthng_<country>.zip in the BeamNG user folder’s mods directory, kept packed. Start EarthNG - Planet in Freeroam and choose a point inside installed coverage.
For custom EarthNG coverage: consider Map Builder separately
Map Builder prepares additional packs and has its own dependency and platform instructions. It is optional for players using ready-made regional packs. Do not mistake its Python requirements for requirements of the native player mod.
Coverage, navigation and online services
BeamNG.Earth is designed around global geographic locations with data retrieved as needed. Global reach is not equal detail at every point: terrain measurements, imagery and feature records vary. A region can be reachable while particular streets or buildings remain incomplete.
EarthNG’s documented native player workflow starts with installed regional coverage. Check the available packs before selecting a destination. Finding a place name in its map interface does not automatically mean a landing pack for that area is installed.
The navigation tools also need to be compared specifically. BeamNG.Earth documents online search and routing alongside teleport and Autodrive. EarthNG documents place search and road display; its map guide explicitly distinguishes the nearby-road display from a new long-distance route planner. Similar map visuals do not prove identical routing capabilities.
Which setup fits your intended use?
Explore many distant places
Consider BeamNG.Earth’s on-demand model if you want to move between geographically distant destinations and are comfortable running a companion application. Check data coverage and connectivity at the places that matter to you.
Stay within a prepared region
Consider EarthNG’s ready-pack workflow if an available region matches your trip and you prefer a native mod without a companion server. Check pack compatibility and install the matching planet ZIP.
Join friends through BeamMP
BeamNG.Earth provides an explicitly documented BeamMP path, currently in testing. Choose versions with your host. This comparison does not establish EarthNG’s multiplayer support or lack of it.
Build your own regional pack
Review EarthNG’s optional Map Builder if local pack preparation is the goal. Read its platform, dependency and storage instructions before assuming that making a large region is as simple as installing a ready pack.
What this comparison cannot rank
We have not run a controlled side-by-side game test, so there is no supported winner here for frame rate, loading speed, visual fidelity or stability. A developer’s result on one machine is not a measurement of both projects under the same conditions.
For a useful personal comparison, use the same game version, vehicle, location, graphics settings and traffic conditions where possible. Note whether geographic data is already cached or a region is prepared. A first visit and a repeat visit measure different amounts of work.
Keep the question narrow: which workflow suits your computer and the places you actually want to drive? If a required feature is not documented, treat it as unverified and check the project’s current sources rather than turning the uncertainty into a negative claim.
Questions & answers
Are BeamNG Earth and EarthNG the same project?
No. They have different developers, repositories and player installation models.
Which one needs a companion server?
BeamNG.Earth’s player app runs a local world server. EarthNG’s documented ready-pack workflow uses a native mod without that companion service.
Does EarthNG require country packs?
The current player instructions call for the planet ZIP and at least one country or regional pack. Select a location inside the installed coverage.
Can I play without installing Python separately?
The BeamNG.Earth packaged application and EarthNG ready-made packs both provide routes without separate player Python setup. Source development and map building are separate workflows.
Which covers more places?
BeamNG.Earth describes global on-demand coverage; EarthNG’s ready-pack workflow depends on installed regions. Coverage should be checked for your actual destination, and it does not establish equal detail.
Which has better performance?
No comparable test has been performed here. Hardware, data preparation, location and game settings would need to be controlled before making a reliable claim.
